Hi Josiah. Welcome to ham radio.
Since you are a Technician you are limited to frequencies for your class of license. You can operate on any frequency allowed by your license, but you may not make a contact during the COQP contest using a repeater. All contacts must be Simplex.
Any software is allowed to be used, and if you give a station a contact, that contact will count, even if you don't send in your log, so don't be concerned about that.
If you Google Apple or Mac or Linux contest software, you possibly will find something that will work on your computer. Any software you choose to use is acceptable. It doesn't have to be approved. What you are probably referring to are suggested software programs. On the club web site there are forms for putting down the information you receive and send. Please take the time to thoroughly read the rules.
I think you are using one of the small Chinese Handheld radios. Just stick with the non repeater frequencies. Contacts via a repeater are not allowed in the contest, or any contest for that matter.
I run a PC so I can't offer any suggestions as to what software is available for a Mac or Linux. Sorry 'bout that.
If you've never been in a contest before I might make a suggestion that perhaps you would like to come over to my place and sit with me for a couple hours to see how it's done. If that interests you, please call me at 520-0288 NLT than Friday. It will give you an idea of what contesting is like. It's your choice. I am usually available after 9 A.M.
Hope that helps a little.
73,
Dick - W0RAA

I'm curious what it would take to get some Mac or Linux logging software on the approved software list. I'm mostly a Linux guy, but I do have other options if I must. I'm assuming that a log file in some specific format is to be turned in so the software has to support that?

>> You can participate in any mode (CW, RTTY, SSB, PSK, JT65, etc). If you hold a Tech license you can get on 10 meters and hand out a few points. And you can also operate on the VHF and UHF frequencies (just not through a repeater) The main thing is to "JUST DO IT".

>> So how about it guys and gals? Fire up the rigs and hand out a few contacts. If you have mobile capabilities, get in the family buggy and go to a few counties and hand out some points.
>>
>> Drop me a short e-mail and let me know if you plan on being a participant, and what county/counties you will be operating from/in.

>> We offer a nice looking plaque for the Highest Scoring Club member each year. Go for it!!!!!!!
