[PPRAANet] Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinners

Well, I don't know about the ham-to-ham combat, but I did enjoy the article
on foxnews.com and the video to go with it about the growth in ham radio.
Thanks to Pam and Stu and James for sending that along - I would've missed
the article otherwise.

I'd also like to take a moment and cover an aspect of ham radio that we've
been doing in Colorado Springs for several years, and that is providing
communications support to the Salvation Army during their Thanksgiving and
Christmas holiday dinner programs. The Salvation Army serves thousands of
meals over these two days, and the first one is coming up this Thursday.

I'd like to ask if anyone is able and willing to participate this year in
support of the Salvation Army. Jerry VerDuft AD0A is coordinating and
looking for additional volunteers. Hams from all around the amateur
community have been helping with both the Thanksgiving and Christmas events
to help coordinate the distribution of meals to the needy in Colorado
Springs. There are 6 serving sites this year, one fewer site than previous
years (New Song Church is not on the serving list this year), and we have
pretty much all the locations covered except for one. Jerry is looking for
someone to work the Manitou Springs Town Hall site this year.

I don't know if Jerry's initial e-mail went out to the PPRAANET reflector,
but if it didn't, I included it below. As Jerry mentioned most of the
activity takes place in the morning, giving us enough time to work the event
in the morning and then be available for an afternoon or evening
Thanksgiving dinner at home. If you think you can fit your schedule into
this, please consider doing so.

As you all know from previous years, this event goes a long way towards
helping the Salvation Army serve meals to the needy, and it also helps us
with building and keeping our relationship strong with the Salvation Army.
Alma Scott greatly appreciates our support of their functions.

If any of you have the time this Thanksgiving I know that Alma Scott and the
community would appreciate any support you can give.

Please reply to Jerry in the CC line if you can help with this worthwhile
event!

Thanks

Subject: Salvation Army Holiday Dinners

We have been asked once again to support the Salvation Army with their
serving holiday dinners at various sites on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas
Day. Their will be six sites to support on Thanksgiving (4 in Colo Springs,
1 in Fountain, and 1 in Manitou Spring) and five sites on Christmas day
(minus 1 in Colorado Springs). Time will be 0900 to 1430 both holidays. We
hope to have an operator and alternate for each site + NCS and an alternate.
I know these are family days but the outreach of Salvation Army to feed the
less fortunate deserves our support. I just plan my family gathering for
after 1430 on these days or another day. We would appreciate volunteers to
support this communications effort. Please e-mail me at ad0a at arrl.net and
copy n7lv at amsat.org.
