I have just spoken with Tom.  Things are much worse than I thought.  The
Doctors have advised Tom to assemble the family.  They do not expect her to
recover.  Even if she somehow recovered, she would face dialysis and a
ventilator.  She has a DNR in place unless she has a reasonable chance of
having a normal life.

As would be expected Tom is not taking this well.  He's got a brave face on.
He is accepting the fact that Sue will not be coming home.
