To find your grid at the home QTH, look up your QRZ listing and that
works as long as you get home delivery or your PO Box is in the same
grid as your station. K0NR has a web site that shows the CO grids. QRZ
or a Garmin GPS will show 6 figures, ie for N0KE DM69em. For this
contest you only need the first 4 figures. If you have a Garmin GPS and
choose Maidenhead it will show the grid you are in. You can also make
QSOs on FM simplex but on 2m you can not use the national simplex
frequency on 146.52 so most people use 146.49 or 146.55. there have been
times I've worked a grid on 2m FM that I didn't work any other way (like
my own grid). The 446.000 MHz national simplex frequency for 70 CM is
fair game as it is for other bands, 52.525, 223.5, and 1294.5. I would
not expect to find much activity on FM on 6m or 1294.5 even in the front
range.
The calling frequency for 6m is 50.125 USB or CW and that is the
place to listen (park the rig squelched or unsquelched). Once you
determine the band is open, go up from 50.125. Most CW activity is
between 50.080 and 50.100. 50.100 to 50.125 is the DX window so do not
work USA or lower tier VE stations in the DX window. there has been some
DX recently to Europe, Japan, Hawaii and the Caribbean/Northern South
America. Most of the DX is on CW although I did work a FY1 on 50.135 USB
yesterday. Look for JE1BMJ on 50100.5 starting around 2300z. He worked
HI3TEJ yesterday.
The contest period is noon MDT Saturday until 9:00pm Sunday. Please
spend as much time as you can spare.
