[PPRAANet] Slashed zeros in Microsoft Word

I was getting tired of using ALT-0216 for entering slashed zeros into call
signs, especially in Microsoft Word. So, I started trying to find a way to
have Word auto-correct the use of certain combinations of letters and a zero
to the same letters and a slashed zero. Well, auto-correct only seems to
work on whole words (or callsigns), and it doesn't appear to allow
wildcards. So, I had to look for some other convenient way, avoiding holding
down the ALT key and pressing four keys on the keypad in succession. I think
this is the easiest way to go:
Launch Word (This was from Word 2000 - your version may be slightly
different or your mileage may vary)
Select Tools menu.
Select Customize.
Click on [Keyboard] button at the bottom.
Scroll down through Categories and click on Common Symbols.
Scroll down through Common Symbols and click on the (larger) slashed zero
(Ø).
Place cursor in "Press new shortcut key" textbox if it's not there already.
Hold down the Alt key, and press the 0 (zero) key.
Press the Assign button.
Place cursor back in "Press new shortcut key" textbox.
Hold down the Alt key, and press the / (forward slash) key.
Press the Assign button.
Both of the new assignments should appear in Current keys list.
Click on Close and Close again. The changes should be saved in Word for
future use. Whenever you want a slashed zero (in Word) just hold down the
Alt key and hit the 0 (zero) or the / key and voila - your slashed zero
appears.
I gave instructions for having both Alt-0 and Alt-/ work.... that way, when
you're wanting a "slashed zero", you don't have to think about whether to
use the 0 or / .....either will work equally well.
Enjoy.
