To follow up from what Jackie posted earlier. This was in Wednesday's
Gazette. There is also a picture (online).
I will certainly miss Joe - he was always participating in VE sessions back
when I first became a VE. I am sad that I missed his service this morning -
but I just didn't know.
Lt. Colonel (retired) Joseph J. Marciano of Colorado Springs, Colorado
passed away on July 27, 2008. Joe was born on July 7, l924 and was raised in
Brooklyn, New York. A highly decorated retired USAF officer and World War II
veteran with 24 years of service to his country, while still active in
post-war USAF, Lt. Colonel Marciano held high - level positions while on
assignments in Mississippi, Colorado, Germany, and Denmark. In his final
assignment serving as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Allied Air Force Baltic
Approaches, Joe received the Joint Commendations Medal from the Department
of Defense. Following his retirement from the USAF, he served as a PACE
instructor for the U.S. Navy completing over 40 instructional assignments
aboard 26 Naval Ships. He was an avid and active member of the Pikes Peak
Chapter of Amateur Radio Operators whose call sign KQ0S is known all over
the world. Sailing, his love of the ocean, traveling the world, and his
grandchildren were few of his many passions. He is survived by his wife,
Shirley of more than 54 years and his children, Jay Marciano of New York,
Kimberley Marciano of New Mexico and Stephen Marciano of California, his
grandchildren are Toni, Julia, Joe and Talia. He is also survived by 2
sisters, Roseanne Devaney of North Carolina, Marion Oddo of New York and his
brother, Emil Marciano of Florida. Memorial services will be held at 11:00
AM on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel 1830 E.
Fountain Blvd. Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. The family requests that
memorial donations be made to a charity of choice.
