Ryan,
Your mention of "young ham involvement" is timely in that we are about to
make choices in the leadership of the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division. I would
invite everyone who recognizes the need to "involve" and even to generate
excitement amongst our young people towards the hobby of Amateur Radio to
take a very close look at the choices of candidates.
Without naming my choices on this ballot, I took a close look at the
websites, candidate's statements on the election literature, emails from the
candidates and supporters, etc. As I looked over this material, it became
apparent as to which candidates have historically worked to involve and
encourage our youth towards this great hobby.
I have also seen many emails across various lists these past few weeks that
encourage support to certain candidates. A large majority seemed to make
statements based not on what the authors perceived as issues that were
important to them but just the fact that they knew the person and thought
they were a "good guy".
On reflection, this attitude (& I've been guilty of this also) provides for
the continued stagnation of our hobby. I encourage those that are planning
to vote in any election to take a close look at the candidates and the
issues that are important to them and make good choices vs. just choosing
what people perceive as the "good guy". That "good guy" may not be the best
choice for you.
OK, off my soapbox!
Roger, N0VR

As the youngest member of the PPDXG (as far as I know), I think I need
to take a sabbatical to Romania to increase my code speed, getting some
help from some fine CW coaches...hi hi. It's just too bad there isn't a
US competition with this much young ham involvement.
