That's really sad news to hear. Tom had been a key player in satellite 
communications here in Colorado.  For many years he's been an AMSAT coordinator 
for the AMSAT organization, and has always been there to answer questions about 
satellites, do programs at our club meetings on amateur satellite 
communications, operating the Field Day satellite station for as long as I can 
remember, and he was key to the success of our SAREX/Mir space contact in 1998 
when 10 elementary school children spoke directly with astronaut Andy Thomas on 
Mir.  Tom was also a past PPRAA officer and board member.

I suspect the "Jim" you're referring to is Jim N6UPL.  I tried to call his 
number a few times and it's been busy.  He may already know of Tom's passing.
