Hello everyone,
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC or the "Beeb") will broadcast a
documentary on Amateur Radio's involvement in the September 11 2001
terrorist attacks. The half-hour program, titled "Unsung Heros", will air
on BBC Radio 4 at 1030 UTC, Saturday 4 September. It will remain available
on the BBC archives for one month after that. To quote the BBC website
"Through moving interviews, sensitive use of ham radio transmissions and
some harrowing accounts, 'Unsung Heroes' reveals the little-known story of
the 9/11 ham radio operators who provided vital communication networks for
the rescue agencies". Unfortunately, the BBC does not broadcast to North
America any more (because of that new-fangled "Internet" thing!), so you
will have to listen to it on satellite radio or get it from the archives
(unless you catch a flight over to England tomorrow!). The address for the
archives is
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/whatson/search/genre.cgi?genre=fact_documentar
ies (the space between "fact" and "documentaries" is an underscore (_).
More information is available on the ARRL website.
While you're on the ARRL website, you might want to check out the story
about the International Space Station (ISS) Amateur Radio equipment being
set up to act as an orbiting FM repeater. The uplink frequency is 437.800
MHz, while the downlink can be heard at 145.800 MHz. Don't forget that
Doppler shift will affect both the uplink and downlink as the ISS moves
across the sky. Good luck!
