Rick Brown K0SU has sent out two e-mails recently concerning the elections, and made mention of the fact that we are still looking for someone to take the Treasurer's position.
I'd like to toss in some comments regarding serving on the board. First of all, I think it is a privilege and honor to do something for the club like serving on the board. I believe that everyone should try it at least once, and if you like it, serve again. If you think that the club is not going down the right path, then serving on the board is one way to help get it back on track. You really can make a difference.
I hope all of you take the time to consider serving in one of the positions. All positions are important, and the Treasurer is no exception. But don't be turned off because you think that this position is a lot of work. It's not. Yes, it does require putting in a few extra hours per month handling this all. It also requires you to be at least a little bit arithmetically inclined. You will have to add and subtract numbers, and provide a report monthly. Fortunately, several years ago we moved the finances into Quicken, and believe me, this makes like just wonderful for the treasurer. So, I guess you could say that being Treasurer might require you to own a computer. Most of us do own a computer, and most of us have experience balancing a checkbook. So I'd say that most of us already qualify.
Besides, you've got 7 or 8 others on the board that can help, and I'm positive that some of the past treasurers, such as myself or Bob Wogaman, would also be willing to give assistance if you have any questions on any aspect of being treasurer.
Yes, you'll have to pay a visit to the club's mail box periodically, and a visit to the bank to make the deposits. That's what makes up those few extra hours per month. You may consider these to be a negative side of the job, but I'm happy to report that there are positives to this position. I can guarantee that you will meet and come to know EVERYONE in the club, either via the mail when handling their membership dues, or at the meetings when they come up to give you a check. It'll really suprise you to learn who is in the club, and to learn more about them when you speak to them.
If you've never visited the club web page and found the history of the club, you've probably never seen the list of members that have served on the board. I thought it would be nice for all of you, especially the newer or younger members, to see who all has served on the board in years past, so I pulled out the names of those that have been on the board in the past 10 years (see below). All of these people have taken time to serve on the board for at least one term; some of us have served more than one term. At least one, Rosie WA0MNL, began serving on the board back in the 1960's, and she continued to serve periodically into the 1990's. How's that for service? You'll find other past board members from the 70's and 80's that are still active in the club. A few that come to mind are Mike Stansberry K0TER, Doc Cornell W0MCT and Jake Jacobs N0CYR.
If you've ever wondered why some of us don't raise our hand to volunteer to serve on the board, I think you'll find that a number of us old-timers have already served on the board, and now we're quietly hoping to see some of the newer members take a shot at it. It should come as no surprise that sometimes we wonder why some of you don't raise your hand to volunteer on the board.
Personally, I'd like to see this list of names below grow by adding brand new names to this list, rather than seeing the same people serve over and over. Don't get me wrong ... I wouldn't turn away a previous board member from wanting to serve again. But having new blood on the board is one way to bring in new and fresh ideas, and we need that to grow and evolve, especially with all the new things going on in the world (BPL, elimination of CW, new technologies, etc).
So if you've never given it much thought before, reconsider today. If not this year, then next October. I think you'll find that being on the board can be fun, educational, and you'll find there's a lot you can do for the club.
