Fellow HAMs,

The 2005 SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) special event is only two weeks
away. SRD is a 24-hour HAM radio event that begins at 0000 UTC on
December 3, 2005. As of this email, there are 86 NWS stations registered

to participate. In addition to NWS field offices, the National Hurricane

Center, NWS Central Region Headquarters, the Canadian Prairie Storm
Prediction Center (Winnipeg), and the Blue Hill Meteorological
Observatory are registered to participate. If you are interested in
seeing the complete list of participating stations, please visit our
website at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/hamradio/.

The American Radio Relay League has once again graciously agreed to
publicize SRD in QST Magazine. This year’s article can be found on page
72 in the December issue. I also encourage NWS offices to publicize the
event with local media outlets. If you would like a boilerplate press
release, contact me via email.

This is a reminder to those offices located on airport property to
inform the airport manager about your planned activities during SRD.
Also, I ask you to check the SRD web site listed above to make certain
your station information is correct.

One radio mode that has become increasingly popular over the past few
years is Echolink and IRLP. Since my last update, I’ve been able to iron

out some details regarding this year’s set up. We will have two
reflectors available for SRD use this year, a ‘Western Reflector’ and an

‘Eastern Reflector’. The Western Reflector has been graciously provided
by Nevada Amateur Radio Repeaters with help from Kent Johnson W7AOR. The

Western Reflector (node 9258) will be open throughout the entire SRD
event. The Eastern Reflector (node 9219 ) will be reserved for SRD
activities. NWS offices will have the opportunity to sign up for a
scheduled time when they will ‘host’ the net. A control operator will be

provided to manage the QSOs for NWS offices during this time, similar to

what occurs during actual hurricane emergencies. If your office is
interested in signing up for a specific time, please email me as soon as

possible. I would like to thank Danny Musten (KD4RAA) and Rob Macedo
(KD1CY) for making the Eastern Reflector possible. In addition to IRLP,
both reflectors will be connected to Echolink. I hope to have more
details concerning these two reflectors on the SRD web site within a
week. If your local office uses another IRLP reflector node and would
like it publicized, send me the node number and I will list it on the
web site.

The SRD participation certificates are still being finalized. We are
currently planning to have participation levels based upon a cumulative
number of QSOs and type of mode used during contact.

If you have any questions please email me, and thanks again for your
support!
