Lee,

I understand your concern. We all expect the SkyWarn organization and
leadership not to place you in a position where questionable on-air
operation would be required. As a wise craftsman, the leadership knows
that this SkyWarn "toolbox" contains a variety of tools, each intended
for a specific purpose. As it would be foolish to drive a nail with a
wrench, so would sitting you in front of an HF station without providing
you the necessary support.

Your dedication is above question, here, Lee. Your MARS affiliation
speaks to your ability to make a long-term commitment and to meet high
on-air standards. So, where upgrading isn't an option -- and that's
sometimes a fact of life -- other arrangements must be made.

Steve, Allen or others will no doubt put together a cogent plan
regarding HF and publish it when they're ready. I had hoped those plans
were already in place, but it doesn't appear so. There might even be a
policy discussion on this reflector or some other venue to hash out the
future vision.

In offline traffic, I've received some promising speculations and
possibilities for HF in the SkyWarn context. I'm clearly the wrong
person to represent or advocate any of them, though. I defer to others
more qualified.

I look forward to see where all these developments will lead.

Regards,

-- Mike
