Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) has emerged as an
exciting
development in communications. This technology uses
the existing
electricity distribution infrastructure to provide
broadband
access to homes and businesses. Cinergy started a
venture this
spring to provide BPL service to its customers in the
Cincinnati
area. Jim Mollenkopf from Current Technologies, the
manufacturer
of the equipment used in the new Cinergy venture, will
address
key facets of this technology, including an overview
of the
powerline communications channel and how channel
impairments are
mitigated. Network architecture and performance
tradeoffs will be
discussed, as well as how this technology integrates
with power
system operations.
