Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) has emerged as an 
exciting 
development in communications. This technology uses 
the existing 
electricity distribution infrastructure to provide 
broadband 
access to homes and businesses. Cinergy started a 
venture this 
spring to provide BPL service to its customers in the 
Cincinnati 
area. Jim Mollenkopf from Current Technologies, the 
manufacturer 
of the equipment used in the new Cinergy venture, will 
address 
key facets of this technology, including an overview 
of the 
powerline communications channel and how channel 
impairments are 
mitigated. Network architecture and performance 
tradeoffs will be 
discussed, as well as how this technology integrates 
with power 
system operations.
