I do not belive Icom built the 8500 themselves.
Too much of the building technique inside the receiver
and the options available points to a non-Icom design.

I guess Icom abandom wide-receiver manufacturing many
years ago and let other electronic plants design and
manufacture receivers for them. Thats what I've heard
from people "in the know how". Perhaps it got too tideus
and awkward to contiunue that way, when Icom themself
doesn't have full control of the products quality.
