Ubbe had the solution. Got a full 9-pin serial extension cable this week and
everything is now working perfectly (pity cables aren't just $2.99 here in
the UK!). Looks like the handshaking is handled differently by each bit of
software with ICOM's being the most fussy.

I did have a corrupted eeprom as well. My unit was completely deaf around
137mhz (I bought the unit to automate weather satellite recording) and the
bandscope was giving very little response even on strong comercial stations
that I could receive. Did a search on Google for 'ic-pcr1000 eeprom' and
found a copy of a working unit. After making a backup of the original, I
loaded this version into the unit and the pcr1000 became a completely
different beast! Bandscope now very response and no problem picking up the
satellites overhead. 

It would be interesting to know if using the wrong cable caused the eeprom
corruption or if the unit had already been corrupted. I guess for optimum
sensitivity I should have the unit calibrated by ICOM but it is now
performing well for me so I might leave well alone and save the money.
Anybody had any experience of using other people's eeprom values and effects
on sensitivity?

I belive both your problems are related to the serial cable you are using.

The Icom software need hardware handshake and uses CTS/RTS and whatever to
achive that. Your cable probably is a 3-pin cable with only TX and RX data
and ground that lacks handshake signals.

The pcr1000 needs a "keep alive" pin (DTR?) to be active to not switch
itself off. That signal are probably also missing from your serial cable.

Do not use adaptors and strange (Mac?) cables. Buy a standard $2.99 full
9-pin serial extension cable at nearest computer shop.
