The common discone is for VHF/UHF only.  If that is the antenna you are
using for the SW bands, you have almost nothing for an antenna. 
Disconnect the discone and just put a piece of wire in the back and see
if it doesn't get better.   Almost anything will work better on SW than a
discone.  e.g., on SW, the only thing you have to pick up a signal is the
little top hat on the top of the discone.  That's about like taking
several screw drivers and putting them on your input terminal and
listening to stations.

Good luck - with a longer wire for SW reception.
