Do you have any pictures of your vintage sets Martin?  I love old radio
equipment!  I don't have the time or money right now to feed any of those
projects :(

I've had the opportunity of some extensive operating on a collins s-line
radio and also a 40's vintage hammurland running 5 watts output.  Made a
contact with Russia, 5 watts :)  That was a good day indeed!  I'm only 26
years old, but I've had the opportunity to experience AM modulated all
vacuum tube chats and let me tell you something, there is magic in them
there tubes!

Technology has sort of a sterile feeling to it these days.

may I step in?

Let's all draw a breath and shake hands before we end up with a possible 
mini flame war on our hands.

As one of the new technologists who programs computers for a living, I'd 
like to weigh in by saying that I have enormous respect for people who 
understand vacuum technology and analogue circuitry in general.   I collect 
and restore vintage radio sets (I have 50) and some of these things are 
works of sheer genius.  Hats off to technology old and new, and to all of 
those who practise it!

Oh dear, I seem to have rattled your cage, somehow.

If the subject is beyond your grasp, then OK, but don't assume that modern
electronics is a closed book to everyone else in the group. Were you aware
that radio amateurs have been modifying commercial and military equipment
for donkey's years? Or even designed and built very sophisticated kit from
scratch? Do you think there's some special magic to using microcontrollers,
that only the frightfully clever chaps at Icom can understand? Or is "can't
do" just your attitude to life in general?

Next time you're pressing the buttons on your mysterious box of electronic
wonders, just remind yourself that it was designed by quite ordinary
engineers. If you wish to regard them as having vastly superior mental 
gifts
to yourself, then that's entirely up to you.
