[PCR-1000] EEPROM backup under WinXP

I've just bought a second-hand PCR1000, and am trying to backup the
eeprom. I have Linux and Windows XP machines available, but older
versions of Windows will need some digging.

The latest Icom software works perfectly, so I don't think there's
any major problem with the PC or the radio. However, both the backup
programs I've tried fail.

PCR1000bur1v2 gives some sort of runtime error, then crashes.

Backpcr.exe tries to connect on com1, appears to fail (though
that's where it's connected, to a real com port) and then hangs
trying to read com2. There isn't actually a com2, though it
might be an internal modem or a USB port that isn't plugged in.

I'm not sure whether these programs just don't like XP or don't
like something about the machine I'm using. Has anyone successfully
backed up the EEPROM using Windows XP ? Or is there a backup
program that works under Linux ?
