[PCR-1000] Newbie Question

Hi, Bill,

WFM is wideband FM. This is the FM signal you will find in the FM =
broadcast band.

NFM is narrowband FM. This is the FM signal you will hear on amateur =
repeaters and some business communications.  This signal will be common =
on VHF and up.

AM is amplitude modulation. This is the type of signal you will find in =
the AM broadcast band, and most international shortwave transmissions.

USB and LSB are upper sideband and lower sideband, respectively. This is =
a form of AM in which the carrier signal and one of the sidebands have =
been removed.  If you listen to SSB (single sideband) on an AM receiver, =
it sounds muffled and distorted. A receiver that uses a "beat-frequency =
oscillator" reinserts the carrier at the receiver detector and the =
signal once again sounds like normal audio.  You will find SSB stations =
on the amateur bands and spread throughout the shortwave spectrum.

CW is continuous wave. It is generally used to describe a Morse-code =
transmission using on/off keyed CW.  It is used on most amateur bands, =
and is common on MF/HF (the 1.8-28 MHz amateur bands).

FSK is frequency-shift keying. It is used for various digital =
transmissions, such as radioteletype (RTTY).  You will find this type of =
signal on all of the MF/HF bands, although not all can be decoded by the =
PCR-1000.
