same here, I pick up NDB beacons at 300 Khz in Puerto Rice from NJ with a RS 
discone

my buddy used an L antenna in HF but needed to use the attenuator and a 
passive preselector to reduce overload

he now uses a wellbrooke (UK) active loop with great results, its a 36 inch 
loop that can be mast mounted and rotated nulling/peaking signals, some folks 
even put it on 2 axis rotators for tiling to do same against skywave. its on 
my xmas list.
