If you do'nt use GPS as time source than it's not essential. Time software 
like TAC32 would tell you if it receives those "one pulse per second" 
impulses. Nowadays when cheap integrated GPS receiver/antena devices like 
Deluo products are quite affordable, some people use them as time source 
inputs to specialized software which usually thinks there should be some Com 
port with GPS attached. When there is no free Com port available usually 
USB-Com connectors are used just like for Icom receivers, and the problems 
are similar. Seems that not all impulses which would be normally processed by 
Com port come trough USB-Com connectors, at least not trough all of them.
