Wow,

I just bought one for $200...ouch!

I've had a lot of lightning this year.  Had a USB to serial converter from
Radio Shack coiled up, hooked into the RS-232 to digital converter to go in
the CI-V port of one of my Icom Ham rigs....blew out the CI-V.  Afraid to
open it up...but, that is all that appears to be bad (knock on wood).

Kinda spookily, I got quite a bit of aluminum above the roof and out back,
no hits (knock harder on wood).  Two years ago, second house down the street
from me got hit (second story, left hole big enough to see the studs).  That
was before I put up antennas....maybe they're bleeding it off before we get
the big arc over?
(knock really really hard on wood)

I just want to say that protecting the PCR-1K against statics makes
good sense. Just got mine back from ICOM, it was gone deaf on the
HF bands, and the diagnose was "static overload to the frontend",
and that is not covered by the warranty, so it cost me 200$ to
have it replaced.
