One nice thing that WinRadio provides is a Visual basic interface/API (they
call it "Radio Basic", and it's free) - making it easy to construct your own
software to drive and/or control the radio.  They provide the 'building
blocks' of the controls - even the tuner wheel... WinRadio has even run
contests, asking folks to send in their best radio software ideas & code and
has awarded radios as the prizes.

and.. WinRadio also publishes the interface spec.  Something I wish Icom was
ore forthcoming about - although a lot of people have reverse engineered the
command set.

WinRadio also has models that go well beyond 1.3gHZ.

The advent of "CAT" (computer controls) in many radios, including a lot of
amateur sets, have expanded the Computer Controlled Radio spectrum greatly.
In addition to Icom, there are computer controlled receivers available from
WinRadio and Ten-Tec.  The amateur suppliers all have some of their sets
with CAT and Kenwood has a completely computer controlled transceiver that
has no mechanical front panel at all....  The learning curve for the Icom
PCR1K goes a long way to understanding all these other radios.
