[PCR-1000] ICOM IC-PCR1000 software on Windows XP

Don't blame AMD or Sony. Windows XP was not as big of a change as most
people think. If you look at Windows 2000, it's version is 5.0. Windows XP
is version 5.1. There is some food for thought. Few of the very basic,
underlying Windows API calls have changed, and it is pretty much moot since
the program was written in Visual Basic...VB4, 16-bit of all things. If
AMD's processors were the issue, more programs than the PCR control would
have problems...enough for Microsoft or AMD to do something about it.

Unless you are willing to connect your laptop to the internet and download
an outstanding updates for XP, then you really have no room to complain.
There have been several Application Compatibility Updates for XP, and there
is a Service Pack coming out on the September 9.

Until then, might I recommend qtpcr for Linux? It works great.
How about formatting your hard drive and loading Win 2000 or Win98 SE? There
are always options.

It is probably a combination of the AMD processor and the way Sony
implements it.  I have been told both here on the list and by others that
XP completely changed how Visual Basic files and some other type files are
handled and as a result I have sure been unhappy with it and Microsoft.  I
suppose Icom could be faulted too but they at least disclaim that their
software will only work with Windows 3.1 and 95.

Yes, TalkPCR does "kind of" work but I have found I can't import the
registration from my Mac which I use on the Internet to the Sony and have
it work, I have tried the experiment and it failed miserably, when the file
is taken from the Mac to the Sony on floppy and copied into the TalkPCR
directory nothing happens, the experiment was supposed to make the initial
start up screen clear but it simply did nothing in my case as if the
computer wasn't even recognizing that it was ever copied to it.  I am not a
big fan of TalkPCR, the Icom software did some things in some ways that I
really liked (despite the fact that no one else liked it).  Several pieces
of the TalkPCR program apparently don't work until you purchase the product
and I wouldn't even mind doing this just to be able to use the radio again
but it would be useless as I can't get the files that are received from the
internet by the Mac to work on the Sony.

All in all I would have given anything if my Toshiba Win 95 machine hadn't
"bit the dust".  I  not only don't like XP, I HATE XP and I am certainly
not ever going to buy a Sony computer product again.
