The virus removed everything except empty sub directories or folders.
I had my operating system w2k backed up on tape but I only had one tape
(20gb tape) 36gb Hard drive the remaining drives 2 of them with 27gb had my
data.
I had only just go the tape drive to replace smaller tape drive 4gb that had
stopped
working and don't not have the time or money to buy extra tapes ($60 each)
Because the virus removed all the files I can not identify it.
It all started when I bought a $9 computer game called Startrek away team,
found
it hard and downloaded a trainer, Norton was set-up to scan all downloaded
files,
it was a single executable file and I ran it even then Norton did nothing
which
in past times saved my bacon. The result of running the trainer the screen
went berserk
you would not believe it unless you saw it, bits flying everywhere on the
screen, you
could not recognize anything. When I tried to reboot nothing nada zip nix.
the only
structure left on my hard drives were empty folders. I booted using dos 98
er disk
I had duel boot my drive C was gone empty. Have I explained myself enough.
and btw
my definition file for Norton WERE up to date. I still don't know what virus
did
this no evidence left. What remains I need to get my receiver going again it
is
an early s/n 01160.  I wanted to keep this simple, everyone so far seem more
interested in the virus than getting me going. Help!!! Please!!!

What do you meen "lost everything"?
Do you know what virus you got? Norton do fail to find some viruses...
Did you use windows 9X or windows 2k? I dont get it... why not boot to
DOS and copy the RAD or BIN (depends what backup-prog you used) to
a floppy or something. If its a boot-virus you can always clean the boot
of the floppy with some other anti-virus program after that. Viruses dont
normally attack files that are not executables, so the backup would not
be infected by any virus... If you have trouble booting from C, there is a
chance that it will work to boot from a floppy and then run diagnostics...
I have never lost any data from a virus "destroyed" harddrive... there
always
seems to be some way around the problem. I hope that you did not format
the harddisk to clean it from the virus... that would have been a mistake.
If you did, or there is no way to get the backup from the drive... there are
copies of RAD and BIN-files on the internet that may work... but I strongly
suggest that you try HARD to get your own file before using any of them.
