[PCR-1000] PCR1000 Windows XP

Dave,

I have recently downloaded two utilities for EEPROM backup.  I now have
two PCR1000's and I am quite concerned about loss of data from using
third party software.  I know.  $150.00 later, after having Icom restore
the data based on complete receiver re-alignment.  I have not yet used
the backup utilities, but I must with what I am doing with my radios.
Can you tell me what backup platform that you use ?  Beware: anyone who
is even remotely interested in the Bonito software:  DO NOT WASTE YOUR
TIME AND MONEY.  This, as others are, are based on "cool looking
graphics" and what appear to be functionally usable apps.  I cannot
justify running an antique operating system on any of my pc's.  Current
technology demands running a true 32 bit addressing, with capability of
managing at least 2GB of memory effectively.  It is almost ludicrous
that Icom does not even support or technically evaluate on one of the
third party software packages available.  ScanStar and Scan Cat are
programs that hark back to WYSIWYG functionality, and from what I can
tell, are poised potentially to take up the technological slack as we
move into the 21st century, and away from 16 bit architectures.  

One thing is clear, Gates et al, chip away at the cornerstone by which
the engineering tools that I use for my livelihood, hobby's,
programming, and general membership in the worlds technology pool.  When
we have an open source tool that is matured and portable ( Linux ??? ),
and does not hide the spying, collecting of data and other "things" that
our constitution deals with on a daily basis, we can sit back knowing
that the seemingly trivial problems ( XP can't find a comm port ? ) can
be dealt with without guessing and attempting to look at the " man
behind the curtain ".

I apologize for digressing, but this matter seems to be on the mind of
many who have something to say.

Suggestion - if you only run a couple of application on your Windows
machine
why do you need WinXP at all. The operating system handles COM port
communications in a different way to Win98 and 95. Wipe the disk and
install
Win98 - if you don't have a copy it should still be obtainable. Over
here in
the UK there are 3 or 4 "remaindered" software suplliers with Win98 at a
very low price. Should be some equivalents near to you or on web. There
are
also other alternative ways. Reinstalling the software should then
eliminate
the clashes that might be the cause of your problems. Don't forget to
download one of the PCR1000 EEPROM backup utilities and backup your
eeproms
memory first thing. I run a comparison check once a week and have tried
various types of third party software with my PCR1000 with no ill
effects.
