I have the DSP option in my PCR-1000 and would not buy it again based on
the performance/cost ratio.   

It offers noise reduction and automatic notch and does these functions at
the audio level only.  It is not an IF level DSP unit.  I have a Radio
Shack Audio DSP filter that plugs into the speaker port.  It has about
the same performance re noise reduction and notch reduction. The RS unit
also offered a 3 position CW filter which the Icom unit does not offer. 
You can find these at swapfests for $25 so the $125, or whatever the Icom
DSP is now, is really not worth it.

One other consideration is the form factor.  If you take your PCR-1000
with you on travels etc, and listen to AM broadcasts where a Notch filter
is great, then the internal DSP is convenient as it avoids a separate
package, separate wall wart etc.
