[PCR-1000] Win XP and Icom Software

It would be interesting to know what the highest serial number sold is.

I bought #03960, new, back in 98 (fall '98, I believe).  It came with 1.31
and has worked well on '95. '98. NY, and now also a PalmPilot (PCRPILOT).
I'm now playing with the TalkPCR demo and will probably buy it.....

If we can find the lowest number (sold 1995?) and highest (sold 2002)
number, we'd have a fair count of the number sold.  Without the Front Panel
expenses (including all the other things needed for that real-estate) at
more than $400USD retail (higher elsewhere probably to discourage
gray-market imports of un-blocked ones) and probably USD$300+ from Icom to
the dealer - this has got to be a profitable product.  My group's profit
margin almost tripled when we went to software controlled electronics -
despite the price falling by more than 60% over 5 years.

Each product family at Icom probably has it's own 'product marketing' folks.
This one may be vacant - hence the no support issue.  It is not one of
Icom's sexier products and may have trouble gathering interest there.  Icom
may have felt (rather erroneously) that these were all sold to
'scanner-nuts' not to 'real radio people' (a phrase I heard in Japan from
Kenwood).  The 'scanner-nut' group is definitely not in Icom's focus.

However, based on this, some people may wonder how well Icom would support
any future products.  Can I see a class action heading to Japan.......

It's a shame that Icom didn't make the interface public domain.  They would
have had great feedback and enhancements (FREE!) from thousands and
thousands of users....
