There is firmware, in the case of my PCR-1000 I think it's mask programmed
in processor chip itself. The EEPROM that folks are discussing is where
parameters that control certain aspects of the receiver are stored. This is
used to align the receiver electronically (as opposed to manually using a
screwdriver).
