Thanks for your reply.  I have a serial port on the Sony connector, but it

There are devices that allow a usb port to act as a serial port.  They have
a usb connector at tone end (plugs into the computer usb port or a powered
usb hub.  The other end  is a very small box with a DB9 connector.

I believe Belkin sells these - but.... they're about $50.00USD each.  More
than the cost of a serial port card for your PC.

Most of the radio manufacturers that use the PC serial port for control or
attachment apparently haven't noticed the usb revolution that's taken place
in the PC business in the past few years.  Many computers are coming without
any serial ports as a standard.
