Winter Weather Discussion
Weather Services International
500AM CST Tue Feb 25 2003
Winter weather will continue through the next several hours across southern Arkansas and northern Mississippi, but expect additional amounts of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to be
minimal. Portions of northern Mississippi may see an additional 1/10" ice in those areas where freezing rain is the predominant precipitation type, such as the Cleveland, Grenada, and
Greenville centers. A greater mix with snow and sleet over Southhaven and Senatobia will cut down ice amounts there, and any snow amounts should also be rather light.
Precipitation with this system should end over southern Arkansas toward early-mid morning, and northern Mississippi around mid-morning. Some locales may have received .25-.35" ice in
extreme southern Arkansas overnight. Finally, even portions of Navasota and Huntsville in the Texas Franchise may see a little freezing rain this morning, but nothing greater than 1/10"
ice will accumulate.
The next system to affect the region may be slower to arrive than thought previously, but could still affect much of Arkansas, northern Louisiana, and northern Mississippi with a mix of
precipitation types.
There will be very little break in the precipitation across the Central Franchise, with light freezing rain and rain likely redeveloping late tonight and continuing Wednesday with
greater intensity. However, temperatures will be borderline freezing again, so amounts are certainly in question as readings slowly rise. At this point, they should total less than
1/10" ice.
Southern Arkansas through mid-Mississippi will not likely see any precipitation begin again until very late at night, although it will probably take the form of light freezing rain.
Temperatures should slowly climb during Wednesday, but how quickly they do so will determine amounts of ice. At this time, generally 1/10" ice accumulation or less is expected.
Central Arkansas through northern Mississippi is even more problematic, with readings likely to remain below freezing for a longer period of time, but with an even slower onset of
precipitation. Freezing rain may not begin here until late Wednesday morning-midday. Again, 1/10" ice or less would be the most likely accumulation Wednesday afternoon, but much will
depend on how quickly temperatures can go above freezing. Northern Arkansas may not see any freezing rain until late Wednesday afternoon and night, and precipitation may never fall that
heavily in this area.
No ice or snow is expected for Texas, Southern, or Metro, but thunderstorms with locally heavy downpours and frequent lightning are occurring in portions of the Texas Franchise this
morning. More may develop tonight and Wednesday in the Southern and Metro Franchises.
Due to the nature of these storm systems, with some uncertainty regarding timing and amounts of precipitation, please monitor future forecasts from WSI on the potential for another
winter storm to affect parts of the service area tonight and Wednesday. CMR
