Winter Weather Discussion

Weather Services International

600 AM CST Tue Feb 5 2003

A messy scenario is looking more likely now over the northern half of Arkansas starting after midnight tonight, and continuing through much of Thursday.

High pressure over the eastern third of the US, along with developing low pressure over New Mexico and west Texas, will help to pull moisture up into east TX and LA during the day today. At the same time, a cold front will be coming down from the central Plains and Midwest. This will allow for cold air to get into northern AR during the overnight hours.

Rain will become more widespread this afternoon. As the rain spreads northward into AR later tonight, it will encounter the colder air being brought down with the cold front.

For tonight, light snow should start after midnight for Harrison, Batesville, and Walnut Ridge with a dusting to 1 inch possible by Thursday morning. From those networks down to Little Rock, a mix of rain and snow is possible with no accumulation expected.

Thursday, the low pressure will continue eastward into southeast TX. Snow will continue throughout much of the day for the networks mentioned above. By Thursday evening, snow totals may be in the 2-4 inch range. From those networks down to Little Rock, colder air will work in during the afternoon, so a change to snow is possible with a dusting to 2 inches by Thursday evening.

Northern MS could also change over to snow later tomorrow evening with a dusting to an inch possible over Southhaven and Senatobia.

Precipitation should come to an end over AR and northern MS during the late evening hours of Thursday.
