Scott KA3QLF, Joe N3XLS, and I represent the core of The KQX Group. We
have spent plenty of October weekends at my modest QTH in WYO and welcomed
other area Hams to participate while mentoring their contesting skills. We
proceeded to break MM records, then broke those records again, and even set
highest submitted score in some PQPs. Yes, there are plenty of plaques and
paper, for which we are proud to have achieved. I'm not mentioning this in
any way as a brag. We used each contest as a way to learn more, sharpen
skills, and apply forward.
We also learned by observation that a steady decline in /M and /R
participation was being realized annually. These Hams are the lifeblood of
PQP, and if you swept before, you should agree wholeheartedly. So with
nothing more to gain from our usual, the three of us decided to change up
in 2017 after seeing announced plans. We weighed the possibility of a
multi-county multi-op Rover in WPA and EPA. Rover was new to us as a
whole, let alone our ambitious plans. So we gathered and built easy up
antennas and used nothing more than Google Maps to plan the sites, back up
sites, routes and timing.
We headed out across the state early that October Sat morning in my GMC
truck, with gear, rented generator, and good WX forecasted. We activated
WAR, FOR, ELK, and CRN mostly without cell service for self-spotting. That
night, on the way home around midnight, and completely exhausted from the
unforeseen fatigue of so many setups and teardowns, I almost ended our Ham
careers by touching a guard rail on PA118 in LUZ. But with everyone being
unharmed, and minimal truck damage, I decided my fault should not detract
from our adventure, and continued Sunday morning. We activated WYO, LAC,
WAY and SUS.
I believe we set the highest /R submission, and won't get Plaque... No /R
/MM sponsor. So what! We learned a bunch... especially about that whole
driving thing... and left with even more respect for those that take to the
road annually.
So if the next group wants to do something proactive, Plaque... No
plaque... Certificates only... Emailed, mailed... whatever. Think about
the lifeblood lost in PQP ... Please!

If no awards/certificates are awarded, then does the new club need to be
burdened by the time-consuming scoring process?
