My rove plan this year is a little more efficient so hope to be on the air a little longer. I can only call on SSB, but can answer CW CQs. 500w bottom-loaded vertical 20m-40m-80m; I'm hoping to also have a quick set-up hamstick dipole for NVIS action on 40m. BTW, my stupid Yahoo email account has been bouncing or filtering emails from this list all this year despite my having added explicit filter rules to send them to my Inbox. I can only read this list from the web archive. Message-ID: Greetings! Are you getting as excited about this upcoming weekend for the PA QSO Party as I am? I bet you are! I am again helping out Mike, N3LI, our PA QSO Party Chairman, with the administrative efforts for the sponsored plaques. However, I'm having some compuker problems at home right now, so at best for now hope to retrieve last year's spreadsheet that I was keeping for the sponsored plaques. If I cannot retrieve it I should likely be able to find an archived email that I sent to Mike last year. Last year I waited until early November to send out any emails about this and in the end we had several unfulfilled plaque sponsporships, while also trying to create new plaque opportunities. I hope to not repeat that again this year, hence this email PRIOR to the big weekend. A few of you have already contacted me or Mike to let us know that you are still sponsoring a plaque. Thank you for being proactive! For those of you who directly sponsor a plaque as an individual, or through a club that you are affiliated with, please let me know your (individual or club's) intentions for sponsorship. The plaque costs are still at $40 and can be paid either via PayPal or via Check. Information on on payment can be found on the PA QSO Party website (here, at the bottom of this page): http://www.nittany-arc.net/paqsosponsor.html If there are any areas on the PayPal page for notes, please specify the actual plaque that you or your club is sponsoring and who the sponsor is. That can help keep the "housekeeping" in better order (especially as the Nittany ARC treasurer doesn't know much about the PA QSO Party anyway). One of my other difficulties with this effort is that the contact person at clubs often changes (typically the club treasurer) from year to year. If you know of any changes I need to make to my contact list please let me know. It will save me hours of research to find club websites and try to find officer contact information! My next email (if successfully retrieving the list of sponsors) will list the various plaques and who I have listed for sponsorship. Ideally that will still go out late tonight but may not be until tomorrow. Later follow-up emails will show a paid or unpaid column as well. For example, states like California or Texas have multiple ARRL sections. If an operator doesn't know their section, ask them for the county and then use this spreadsheet to cross reference the county to the section. Examples are operations at a club station, individual members operating at home, or mobile. At scoring time, all of the scores for a club are summed up. All of the individual scores are eligible for certificates, etc. The most important thing is to let us know that you are a member of a particular club. - 73 Mike N3LI - On Wed, Oct 11, 2017 at 8:04 PM, leen3lpj wrote: > Hi All, > > Our club, Susquehanna County Amateur Radio Club, would like to operate > as a club. This is Tom Behler: KB8TYJ, from the state of Michigan. It has been two years since I participated in the PAQP. My last effort involved a county sweep in 2015, of which I was quite proud. I couldn't participate last year because I was in the middle of a house move at that time. Now that I'm re-located to the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, and have one HF antenna up (an Alpha Delta DXCC), I'm going to give things a go again this year. I'll operate mostly on 40 meters (both CW and phone). Unfortunately, my DXCC antenna doesn't tune much above 3750 KHZ on the 75/80-meter band. So if I do operate on 80 and 75 meters, my activity will be limited to the lower band segments. Having been first licensed in Cumberland County back in 1969 as a youth member of the W3UU club, this contest has always had a special significance to me, and I look forward to working many of you this week-end. 73 and good luck in the contest from Tom Behler: KB8TYJ, Now Located In Grandville, Michigan -----Original Message----- From: paqso-bounces at mailman.qth.net [mailto:paqso-bounces at mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bud Trench Sent: Friday, October 13, 2017 10:13 AM To: PAQSO PARTY Subject: [PaQSO] 2017 Pa QSO Party Operating Plans as of 10/13/17 The following is a summary of 2017 PA QSO Party operating plans I have seen as of 10/13/17. And especially on Sunday afternoons, when some of the "I think I worked everybody left" doldrums hit, hunting for bonus stations helps keep the operator's interest going. That said, what I won't miss (after organizing the N3SH bonus stations a few years back) is the aggravation from people who don't care for the concept. Especially from those who used to participate on this reflector who not only openly didn't care for the concept, but deliberately spread misinformation in an attempt to kill it. But I'm sure they've got it planned out properly. I can tell you from personal experience that organizing PAQSO Bonus Stations from multiple County's and offering many opportunities to collect all those points was really appreciated by the participants, especially in sunspot propagation lows that would otherwise prevent breaking any records. I did it 2x now with the (2009?) W3OK/cty DLARC multi-Bonus with Co-Chair W3OPA, Chas and in 2014 as W3TDF/cty with NK8Q, Mark (the best partner, BTW!) in order to honor "Da Grump" who I'll be thinking about this weekend. (See August 2015 CQ Magazine feature telling the whole story covering 6 pages!) Both were groundbreaking operations and lots of fun. With no "Assisted Class," spotting is not only allowed, but encouraged, and the new PAQSO Spotters Page at: < http://cwfun.org/funspots/paqp/frames.html > it makes finding all those points easy. We even offered a special one-off Plaque to the Op who worked the most Bonus Stations! So respectfully, it's more a dream than a nightmare, hi. Hope things clear up by tomorrow afternoon, or I'll send in my one CW Q and one multiplier. 72/73 de n8xx Hg QRP >99.44% of the time --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. http://www.avg.com ______________________________________________________________ PaQSO mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/paqso Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:PaQSO at mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to tombehler at gmail.com From n3ntj at embarqmail.com Sun Oct 15 11:38:47 2017 From: n3ntj at embarqmail.com (Matthew Steger) Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2017 11:38:47 -0400 Subject: [PaQSO] Need WAR and CMB In-Reply-To: <004e01d344f8$7f6b1a20$7e414e60$@gmail.com> References: <004e01d344f8$7f6b1a20$7e414e60$@gmail.com> Message-ID: <002101d345cb$b1f557c0$15e00740$@com> Any stations from Warren WAR or Cambria CMB today (Sunday)? Special thanks to my XYL for doing ALL the driving through 21 counties. We were in motion 90 percent of the time only stopping just before a county line to make sure we got the 10 for that county. I hope everyone had a great time. Saturday- we did In order York Adams Franklin Fulton Bedford Somerset Cambria Clearfield Indiana Jefferson Sunday we did Elk Cameron Clinton Lycoming Union Snyder Northumberland Juniata Perry Dauphin Cumberland A few notes from this end. Making a mobile wait while you work another station may mean you do not get to work that mobile. Especially when they are Hill topping and going into deep valleys. Second - please read the rules. I lost count of how many stations would not work me a second time even know I was in different counties. I guess it is there loss, but it also means double work for the mobile to get the 10 contacts for a county Thanks to all the stations hanging in a pulling me out of the noise. I really appreciate those who did. I usually can work fellow low power (5 watts or less) operators as far as New Jersy on 80 meters CW during the Michigan QRP Club's weekly net (3535 KHz, 9 p.m. EDST).? I managed to work ONE PA station on 80 meters between about 0000Z and 0600Z! On 40 on Sunday it was a bit better. No storms in the immediate area, and most folks that were S7 or better could hear my signal.? Wound up with 40 Q's and 25 multipliers. Some people believe exactly what their computer logging program. Maybe their program is out of date. Maybe it can't handle mobiles or rovers. Maybe it wasn't designed for state QSO parties, at least not the version they're running (see item 1) And maybe... they didn't bother to log /M, /R, or /$$$ (county abbreviation) as required by the software to work correctly. They may also be unfamiliar with how QSO parties, this one in particular, work. So they don't realize that there's no longer a penalty, if there ever was one, for working dupes. (And who wants to go back to paper logs for hundreds of contacts again, anyway? Not me!) Of course, some of them are just plain stubborn or set in their ways, and what they think is how they think the world should go. But you know what? Their failure to log you when you've moved to another county is THEIR loss, and if it costs them a mult, that's THEIR problem. Many, many, many moons ago, when I was still WN3VAW and still married to the first one, I operated a few years from the family dairy farm in Greene County. One year, I'm about 15 or 20 QSO's into my first hour, I call an Ohio station who's calling CQ PA. He informs me I'm a dupe. Now I have the entire paper log right there in front of me, I'm still on the first sheet... my handwriting may be atrocious, but it's not THAT atrocious, so I tell him that's not possible. But no, he insists, the computer says I'm a dupe, and that's THAT! Well, we all know computers are NEVER wrong. So I don't waste time arguing with him, I just keep moving up the band until I find a clear spot to squat on. Not 10 minutes later, guess who's calling? Seems that the OH station discovered a bug in his program that was flagging 'odd' 2x3 calls (and yes, I had an odd call, and yes, sometimes that suits me; there, I beat you to it) as dupes. Turns out he needed Greene County after all and that I wasn't a dupe. Of course, I had to reply "gee OM, didn't you just tell me I was a dupe and to go away?" (Yes, I finally did work him, but I did make him sweat a little bit first. I know, not entirely nice of me... ) Which brings us to... the cardinal rule of DX'ing as it applies to dupes in contests: WFWL: When in doubt, Work First Worry Later! 73, ron W3WN -----Original Message----- From: bmanning To: John Myers ; PA QSO Reflector via PaQSO Sent: Mon, Oct 16, 2017 3:15 pm Subject: Re: [PaQSO] rover, you're a dupe Years ago with paper logs dupes were a pain. Participants only have a year to read the Rules and learn what logging software handles the quirks of the PQP that caused the same headaches last year, and maybe run a test session in the months leading up to October to get familiar with it. I suggest as soon as you hear, "You're a dup, OM," the next thing out of your mouth is, "QRZ? This is K?BAK/R in ." Without them, many a clean sweep would be missed. The Frankford Radio Club for their gigantic bonus station effort. Easily the biggest bonus points made I've ever seen. All the fellas who activated a rare county as a portable or home station. And finally to all the out of Staters and DXer's who have shown an interest. The best way we can describe our 2017 PA QP is we were simply in the right place at the time. I would like to call it strategy but it was mostly luck. We seemed to switch bands just at the right times. Conditions were fairly good. Our antennas played, despite not being our first choices. There was a space limitation being in a camp ground with wires running over a busy road. It was a bit cramped in the cabin we rented for three guys but we managed without tripping over our gear and each other. I saw CT version 6 demonstrated at Hamvention, when it was first introduced. Part way through the forum presentation, I walked out, found a vendor, and purchased a copy, and went back to hear the end of it! Sadly, CT & CTWIN were not configured for Pa QSO. I once put a template together, sent it in for consideration, and it got "lost". And then couldn't find my template (basically a mish-mosh of a supported QSO party with county names changed and such) The download site for it disappeared a few years ago. Those who still wish to use it can still get updates for the country files, but if you need a patch file or a driver to adapt it to a newer machine, you're on your own. (And a Microsoft update or driver change to Windows 7 a few years back made it inoperative on my shack computer.) I switched to N1MM+ a few years ago. Overall a nice package, but it has it's quirks too. I want to thank everyone for another great PA QSO Party. As an out-of-state operator, I felt very welcome, and enjoyed the experience immensely. I wound up with 258 qsos, but didn't get the county sweep this year. Missed 5 counties--Cambria, Forest, Schuylkill, Sullivan, and Wyoming. My effort this time was hampered by a few factors. First, since my last participation in the party in October of 2015, I relocated to another part of Michigan, and am still somewhat limited antenna-wise. I don't have an antenna that effectively covers the upper part of 80 and 75 meters, so I couldn't work those bands as much as I would have liked. Besides, the QRN was so bad out here on 75 and 80 meters that I had trouble hearing even those stations I tried to work via CW. Then, about 10 p.m., we had a round of thunderstorms that lasted for several hours, so I had to pull the plug early. I want to give a special thanks to all of the Frankford Radio club bonus stations! Working you guys was a real treat, and will probably provide me with the highest point score I have ever achieved from out here in Michigan. Thanks also to the rovers who helped with the rare counties. In summary, the contest was fun as usual, and I will definitely submit my log and other needed materials within the next few days. I'll definitely participate next year, hopefully with a somewhat better antenna setup for 80 and even 160 meters. The way the PAQP Party is organized and conducted truly makes me proud of the fact that I was first licensed in Central Pennsylvania back in 1969! You cant really do much about it.? ?Its fourms like this that educate operators.? ?I think in the age of internet we are losing touch with the physical mentoring that went along with ham radio.? But a lot people that play in pqp are not big guns in other contests so some understanding needs to happen. I do appreciate the fix stations spotting us rovers and mobiles out there.? As K8MR says you can have numbers at each county the way you want them, the utilities with NA allow you to combine longs, etc. and calculate scores, and when the rules change anybody with a DOS background can change the template. As for the down side, the DOS computer is going to be a special unit, and the fact that DOS won't support USB as far as I know interfacing to radios etc. at the home station becomes difficult. We expect that our official score will break the CEN and Portable M/M records without the bonus station points even part of the equation. FWIW, part of the reason it may have felt we were so bonus station heavy this year may have been the fact the FRC guys are all big time contesters, many were running legal limit, and most have fantastic antennas. I imagine they went S&P out of a lack of answers to CQ's. Probably most importantly, they know how to run stations, and quickly.
