Hi Pete et al.
First, I don't know how my rover score as K8MR/R may have stacked up
against yours, but I never got around to sorting out the various logs from both
that and the W3USA/M operation to submit them. But I'm glad a newbie was
able to get the award!
I agree with your thoughts, with a slight variation. Mobiles ought to be
limited to antennas (and power sources) usable while in motion, but rovers
ought to be the overarching category for the
all-equipment-carried-in-the-vehicle folks. I.e, a Rover can also make contacts while in motion between
fixed operation sites, but a mobile cannot set up to operate with fixed
antennas.
The Rover category is much more helpful to SSB ops, as a mobile antenna,
especially on 80/40 is quite poor. But last year with a 33 foot wire fed
against the minivan body as the RF ground, I was able to work 135 guys in 45
minutes from rare Cambria county on 40 SSB on Sunday afternoon. I trust a lot
of people appreciated that!
But switching between calls and logs while keeping things straight, in
order to be productive while moving, was a major PITA.
I hope a lot of you will check me out in action next Saturday, as I rove
around eastern Ohio in the Ohio QSO Party, noon to midnight EDT. I'll largely
be operating CW while moving, and SSB while parked. See you then!

I "won" the rover division last year, but there were only two rover
entries. Let me again suggest that the rover versus mobile distinction be
eliminated, with the rules changed to allow any type of antenna be used by a
mobile, PROVIDED THAT ALL EQUIPMENT INCLUDING ANTENNAS AND POWER MUST BE CARRIED
IN OR ON THE VEHICLE. This is a common stricture for contest rules for
roving in both state QSO parties and VHF contests, and eliminates the use of
large fixed antennas (pulling up at friend's fixed station and using his
tower and beam antennas for instance). Let the mobile stations decide on the
tradeoffs between setup time versus performance, rather than having a
separate class of mobiles.
Already looking forward to this year's Party,
