Looking forward to going out again this year in PA, with several rover station improvements. Thanks: - To those on this reflector who answered my questions last year about HF roving. Helped this rookie to have the confidence to go on the road. - To N3XLS, a true gentleman, who relinquished his calling frequency on a crowded band and spotted me to let me run in Juniata and give out that fairly rare county to a couple dozen contesters. - To Mike Coslo, who patiently helped me to fill out the multiple form submissions for county operations. - To KD8MQ, for recently posting the analysis of PQP results to rank rare counties. I am starting to use this information to plan my rove this year to visit as many rare ones as I reasonably can. - And of course, thanks to Mr. Coslo and all the other many volunteers who make all this possible. I "won" the rover division last year, but there were only two rover entries. Let me again suggest that the rover versus mobile distinction be eliminated, with the rules changed to allow any type of antenna be used by a mobile, PROVIDED THAT ALL EQUIPMENT INCLUDING ANTENNAS AND POWER MUST BE CARRIED IN OR ON THE VEHICLE. This is a common stricture for contest rules for roving in both state QSO parties and VHF contests, and eliminates the use of large fixed antennas (pulling up at friend's fixed station and using his tower and beam antennas for instance). Let the mobile stations decide on the tradeoffs between setup time versus performance, rather than having a separate class of mobiles. First, I don't know how my rover score as K8MR/R may have stacked up against yours, but I never got around to sorting out the various logs from both that and the W3USA/M operation to submit them. But I'm glad a newbie was able to get the award! I agree with your thoughts, with a slight variation. Mobiles ought to be limited to antennas (and power sources) usable while in motion, but rovers ought to be the overarching category for the all-equipment-carried-in-the-vehicle folks. I.e, a Rover can also make contacts while in motion between fixed operation sites, but a mobile cannot set up to operate with fixed antennas. The Rover category is much more helpful to SSB ops, as a mobile antenna, especially on 80/40 is quite poor. But last year with a 33 foot wire fed against the minivan body as the RF ground, I was able to work 135 guys in 45 minutes from rare Cambria county on 40 SSB on Sunday afternoon. I trust a lot of people appreciated that! But switching between calls and logs while keeping things straight, in order to be productive while moving, was a major PITA. I hope a lot of you will check me out in action next Saturday, as I rove around eastern Ohio in the Ohio QSO Party, noon to midnight EDT. I'll largely be operating CW while moving, and SSB while parked. See you then! 73 - Jim K8MR In a message dated 8/15/2015 1:51:29 P.M. I have a lot of announcements coming up now and soon. We?ll be announcing the Bonus Station shortly, this weekend most likely. After the announcement is made - the callsign hasn?t been finalized yet - I?ll have the rules updated and ready to go. I?ve made some additions to the Web pages. A long needed guide for Mobiles and Rovers. http://nittany-arc.net/paqsomobiles.html Our mobiles and Rovers work hard to make this party a success, and there have always been questions on how to score them, especially for the new ops. Every year I get several different ways that people have done this. And of course it?s a big surprise then their final score comes back as something totally different. This is just the first volley - the updates will be coming fast and furious soon. Side note: the operating rules themselves have no changes this year, so aside from the bonus station, everything else is the same. So if any questions arise, you can use the 2014 rules as a guideline until the new ones are out. - 73 Mike N3LI - From k3lr at k3lr.com Mon Aug 24 05:01:10 2015 From: k3lr at k3lr.com (MRRC) Date: Mon, 24 Aug 2015 11:01:10 +0200 Subject: [PaQSO] Fw: important Message-ID: Hello! Mr. Hellman is 105 years of age and is the oldest living amateur radio operator in the United States and possibly the world. Charlie was licensed in 1925 as a 15 year-old, and joined QCWA in 1975 and is also a member of local QCWA Chapter 181(Hudson Valley). On hand to present the certificate, and represent QCWA President Ken Oelke VE6AFOand the membership were: Treasurer Charles Tropp N2SO, Directors Carole Perry WB2MGPand Pete Varounis NL7XM; along with QCWA Chapter 181 Secretary Mike Sturm, K2AE. Also on hand for the ceremony was Don Finkel, WA2OQM." The certificate reads: ?The QuarterCentury Wireless Association presents this 90thAnniversary Award to its Distinguished Member Charles ?Charlie? Hellman, W2RP tocommemorate Ninety Years of Service as alicensed Radio Amateur.? In addition to the certificate, Charlie was also presented with a letter from QCWA president Ken Oelke VE6AFO which reads in part ?I would also like to say how proud I am that you have kept active for these many years, and to proudly celebrate what many will not be able to achieve in their entire lifetime. Congratulations to you on 90 years as a licensed radio amateur, and may you enjoy many more in amateur radio!? ?The information pertaining to Charlie was discovered when the QCWA webmaster, Bob Roske N?UF, was updating member files and discovered that Charlie was still living in New York and was certainly the oldest living member of QCWA. In recognition of his achievement the QCWA Board of Directors quickly voted to award Charlie the 90 year certificate, a first for the organization. -30- About QCWA The Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) is a non-commercial international association of radio amateurs organized for the promotion of interest in Amateur Radio communication and experimentation for the establishment and advancement of the radio art and public welfare. First announcement: The 2015 Bonus Station will be a MM effort from Wyoming County by the KQX group under the callsign W3C. We?ll have more details as they become available. You can check on them on their Facebook Page - search for their URL under ?The KQX Group? I have updated the rules with W3C noted available on the website: http://www.nittany-arc.net/paqsoforms.html Second announcement: Remember Mobileers and Rovers, that there are guidelines for your log and summary submissions. They are at http://www.nittany-arc.net/paqsomobiles.html In addition, since we?ve had many mobile efforts going to a LOT of counties, it generates a lot of documentation. Last year I implemented a Dropbox account. So if you have a mobile or Rover effort and it exceeds your mail capacity, send me an email, and I?ll give you the address of the dropbox. Third announcement: Despite selling promotional materials of a long, long time, the company store we implemented last year is now history, along with all promotional sales except 67 county plaques. There has been a trend of high initial sales that then taper off over a few years, and while adding caps for last year, there was no demand for them. Our promotional materials, which are used to offset party costs just aren?t doing that any more. We took a pretty good beating the last few years, as sales have fallen below minimum order amounts. And while I?m not tasked with being a profit center, I?m not allowed to drive NARC to the poorhouse either. We will still have the PayPal account and page for the 67 county plaques and for sponsor?s support as well as donations. And those donations have now assumed increased importance. -73 Mike N3LI - From tvguy07 at gmail.com Mon Aug 31 21:35:04 2015 From: tvguy07 at gmail.com (John Myers) Date: Tue, 01 Sep 2015 01:35:04 +0000 Subject: [PaQSO] Announcement In-Reply-To: <1758601A-2745-4C15-9471-1A64D0EDFE02@gmail.com> References: <1758601A-2745-4C15-9471-1A64D0EDFE02@gmail.com> Message-ID: Mike, Would like to take the opportunity to thank you and the rest of the club for everything you do to keep this one of if not THE best of the state QSO parties..
