For older guys ( 72 here) the M-O category is a lot of fun and less demanding on the mind and body. This year I operated S-O from the home QTH in central Ohio with the goal of making the Clean Sweep. Short story about this year's effort: Friday night I decided to enter from home, as the club group didn't come together due to other competing demands. So Fri night I downloaded N1MM+, and managed to populate the PAQP log By 11 pm it was ready to go and I hit the sack. Sat morning at 9 I began building my NVIS antennas from scratch - inverted v's for 80m and 40m, criss-crossed on top of a 28 ft mast to serve as guy wires as well as radiators. Mil surplus 4 ft fiberglass mast sections formed the mast. #14 Home Depot insulated solid copper wire was rough cut, old coax soldered together to form a single coax feed, with a T shaped ceramic insulator tied to the top of the mast. PP rope was tied to the ends of the wires, the mast pushed up with the help of the xyl, and the antenna ends tied down. Wires for 80m ran NW-SE and 40m ran NE-SW. PA is about 70 degrees from central Ohio with skip distances of between 100 and 400 miles. Three trips to each of the 4 ends to trim length resulted in resonances in the middle of the respective bands at 1.2:1 swrs. And at 2:11pm Sat I made my first contact. A bit late but I was ready to roll. Conditions proved to be excellent with strong sigs on 40m all day, both days. By 1:45pm Sunday I worked my 67th county and made my personal goal. It is something that I look forward to each Oct. I was surprised by the number of DX stations out there this year. I am guessing there was a European/DX contest going on (besides the PA and AZ parties). There seems to always be some confusion working AZ stations. Many of them only want to give a AZ party exchange, but I simply enter what they give me and move on. I guess they can work that out on their ends since they're combining two contests into one essentially. I got my PA clean sweep Sunday morning..and I worked 70 ARRL/RAC/DX sections. There seems to be a lot of home stations in CA, TX, and FL that don't know what ARRL sections they live in.. I keep an ARRL section list onhand to cross reference by county, though. Had my highest QSO count ever. Thanks to the mobiles/rovers for some of the rarer PA counties. Was surprised to only hear a few Ontario stations this year, but I worked a good number of other provinces. Propagation seemed fine from 20m down.. even worked a few on 15 and 10m each and got my 1st ever 160m contact (my dipole barely tunes to a 2:1 at the top of the band). Here's to Oct 2015.. 73 Matt N3NTJ -----Original Message----- From: PaQSO [mailto:paqso-bounces at mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of w3hkk at roadrunner.com Sent: Monday, December 08, 2014 11:15 AM To: paqso at mailman.qth.net Subject: [PaQSO] PAQP 2014 Logs, comments Thanks Mike for your tireless efforts, not only keeping all this going, but moving the PAQP to new heights! Keith Carpenter, WD0FIA of Bridgewater will testify to that fact. In his words, he can operate on any mode, or frequency, from any location, with amateur radio. And he assures this reporter that there are dozens of other local ?Ham Operators.? Local Hams include Mike Maynes KD0AUS, Larry Jo Vandewater N0BKB, Doug Welsch KA0MHJ, and Joanne Duckworth KD0MPR, each with different interests. Joanne Duckworth is Union County Emergency Management, Larry Jo Vandewater is a farmer, Doug Welsch is an electronics technician, and Carpenter volunteers as a regional director to USAF MARS (Military Auxiliary Radio System). Carpenter began his ham radio hobby in 1969, building his first radio from a kit purchased from Boys Life Magazine. With this radio, he obtained his first license as a Novice. Keith hasn't been quiet since. He took his Technician License test from Larry Vandewater in 1986. He currently has over 300 Facebook friends that are Ham Radio Operators from other countries; some he chats with daily. They all have different backgrounds, interests, etc. He can send video, pictures, data as well as just chatting. Carpenter has talked with Joe Walsh of the Eagles singing group, King Hussein of Jordan, and nearly a dozen astronauts while they were in space on Mir or the ISS. What is Amateur Radio? According to Wikipedia, ?an amateur radio operator is someone who uses equipment at an amateur radio station to engage in two-way personal communications with other amateur operators on radio frequencies assigned to the amateur radio service. ? The operators are granted an amateur radio license by the FCC after passing an examination on the applicable regulations, electronics and radio theory and operation. As a component of their license, amateur radio operators are assigned a call sign used to identify themselves during communication. There are now three license classes in the United States, Technician, General and Extra. The Technician Class is the entry level license, earned when passing an examination of 35 questions on radio theory, regulations and operating practices. This license allows the ability to communicate locally, and most often within North America. A General Class License opens the door to world-wide communications. The Amateur Extra License conveys all available United States Amateur Radio operating privileges on all bands and all modes. Currently there are over 738,500 licensed amateur radio operators in the United States. This number has grown remarkably in the past 40 years, in December of 1971, there were only 285,000. Recently Tim Allen who plays Mike Baxter KA0XTT from ?Last Man Standing? took the plunge and became a real life Amateur Radio operator, he is now licensed as KK6OTD! There are over 3 million Hams worldwide. All ages, girls and boys, there is no limit as to who operators are. In Adair County, there are young ham operators, including Nathan Maynes KD0FSO, Doug Welch?s daughter Ruthie KD0ZHP and son Richard KD0RDS. Ruthie, a sixth grader at Nodaway Valley, became interested by going with her father and brother to Hiawatha Amateur Radio Club RF Fest in Perry, kind of like a flea market for ham radio enthusiasts. When she was 10, she passed the tests required for the first license one needs. She said, ?I like to talk on 10 meters, everyone sounds like Daffy Duck! ? Her 15-year-old brother, Rick, has all three of his licenses. Carpenter commented that it took him 37 years to get to where Rick is now. Their father, Doug, got his licenses when he was 15, but claimed it was harder then. For one thing, he had to learn morse code. ?Everybody helps everybody, ? Carpenter said, as he has loaned radios to everyone interested, and also offers help with the expertise when getting ready to test for the licenses. There are plenty of things to do with ham radio, and without even owning a radio. A computer with a microphone and internet connection will work via Echolink. Or, using a smart phone you can remotely connect to radio, and contact people all over the world. Morse code isn't required anymore. Carpenter told about how when using the computer, ?You can see the signal before you can hear the noise. ? The digital can cut through the static. And it is possible to use the keyboard instead of a microphone to communicate. In addition to the fun and interesting uses of radio, there is the emergency response aspect of ham radio. Robert Kempf, Adair/Guthrie County Emergency Management, said that he hasn't had the opportunity to use the operators, but they are in the county plans. Adair County has equipment and a radio ready to deploy quickly, a system paid for by a public health grant. Carpenter is the ARRL Emergency Coordinator for Adair County, there is someone designated in every county. ?They are a very important asset, I?m glad we don't have to use them, but good to know they are there. ? Kempf said. The local operators are a very capable group; Kempf can depend on them even if there is no electrical power, phone or internet service. They can talk to the National Weather Service and FEMA directly. The ARRL lists 22 things you can do with Amateur Radio. The things begin with expanding your world by talking, sending text and pictures to unusual places, create a network of ham radio friends, meet awesome people from all over the U. S. and the world. Explore amateur radio by talking through satellites, sending messages in code, and look for hidden radio signals. Putting the radio to work by becoming a weather spotter, using Amateur Radio to control models, robots or drones, support recovery efforts in emergencies, use the radio for community service, track people, pets or wildlife. Go beyond the menu, create technology by building and testing your own gear, experiment with new software applications for radio, and learn radio science that powers cell phones, Bluetooth and other wireless technologies. It seems the possibilities are endless. And with all the technology, the Ham Radio operators aren't disappearing into thin air. Carpenter is staying on air and encouraging others to do the same. Since 2009 over 20 of his friends have become licensed. He has accumulated a collection of over 30 radios during his 44 years of being a Ham Radio Operator; many are on loan, some are housed in curio cabinets in Keith and his wife Roberta?s home in Bridgewater. And then there is his car - a couple of red cars with lots of antennas, packed with interesting gear inside. For me, Ham radio adds color to my life on what could otherwise be a boring drive to Des Moines, or a break from a rainy day. ? Carpenter said. ============================== This article forwarded by: Jodie Rouse, KD0LDE From paqso at mailman.qth.net Fri Dec 19 14:32:13 2014 From: paqso at mailman.qth.net (C. I'll be putting something together with the Alliance ARC, in stark County, OH. * *You can read the entire OSJ at http://n8sy2.blogspot.com/ * *DE KD8MQ* *---------* *FROM THE SECTION EMERGENCY COORDINATOR* By Stan Broadway, N8BHL broadways at standi.com *OHIO ARES NVIS Antenna Day ? April 25..* Get your antenna books out, get together with some friends and come up with a winner! The Ohio ARES NVIS Antenna day has been scheduled for April 25, 2015. Operating hours 10AM ? 2PM. Frequency: around the Ohio ARES 40 meter frequency of 7.240 plus or minus, and around 3.850-3.870 plus or minus. We have all been through several presentations of NVIS (Near vertical sky wave, or ?Cloud burner?) antennas. Sure, the concept is cool and it ought to work. But it?s time to put away the antenna modelers, the calculators and theory and get down with some wire and some coax! Have you actually ~tried~ one of these? If there was a wide-scale disaster requiring you to communicate with nearby counties and Columbus (or other state capitals) do you have confidence you could actually make this work? The best way to find out is to try! We?re taking the lead from Ashtabula, who has had several annual antenna days that were a great success. The idea here is to actually ~build~ different NVIS antennas and try them out against each other. Come up with different concepts: vertical, horizontal, semi-something, and try different elevations from ground level all the way up to the towering height of, say, 20 feet. See which antenna does the best at working nearby counties, Columbus, and neighboring locations as if we were in a large-scale disaster. This isn?t really a contest, in the sense that we?re not looking so much at lots-o-q so?s as we are at comparing our various antennas. So it will be more beneficial to keep track of HONEST signal reports from the same station using our various antennas. We will want to have reports (including pictures?) of your various antennas and how they stood up to each other. >From a simple grid or ranking of your best three or four performers, we can compare these across the state and come up with overall suggestions as the most desirable NVIS setup to have in your tool box. This information may come in very handy for your spring Field Day efforts! But we all know that Field Day, or any other similar contest, is NOT the time or place to be testing antennas- we are in it for QSO numbers and rates! So this is a great day to get some honest experimenting done! *And there?s MORE!..*We are strongly suggesting additional equipment for your field tests: a good grill, some hamburgers and side dishes! This should be far enough into spring that it will be nice to be outside (even with a jacket on) and it?s an excellent time to have a picnic, get some fellowship in, and generally relax! So in your planning, include proximity to somewhere to eat! Use a park, someone?s property, or be creative! Remember we?re testing antennas, so next to a power plant might not be the best idea. The food and fellowship makes this great fun! And, we?re not limited strictly to ?ARES People?. If your local radio club has some experts, draft ?em! It?s all about the fellowship, the fun, and the feuding antennas! More information will follow- but I would love to activate as many (or all!) Ohio counties as possible to make this a benchmark test! The 67 county plaques are still awaiting until I know I have most of them accounted for as people who waited for the results decide if they want one or not. Side note: With the advent of the online store, we can accommodate people well after the party. Also, make sure to have what you want engraved on the WAC plaque when you order. The database uses the Name in the address from the summary. So if you have a multi-op effort and want everyone?s name on the plaque, that?s where to let me know. -73 de Mike N3LI -
