As far as whether it is worth while to setup a digital station we worked 70
QSO's via PSK and Rtty including 5 QSO's with the bonus station this year.
Since 20M is the hot band for PSK, I brought in several multipliers for the
team. Even though most contacts were with bystanders they were polite
enough to make the QSO, give their section, and move on. They may not have
been with the QSO party per say but many were eager to give us the 2 points
and a possible new multiplier. To compare this to Field Day I usually pull
in 150 QSO's on average so when I racked up 70 without much intra-party
activity I was pleased with the results.
The response was so good that I have added a macros when I am casually
operating to offer a QSO Party response when I am on the air and see
someone banging CQ with no luck. If we want more to respond to ours we need
to do in kind.
Is it the most productive mode? no. Is it worthwhile to offer? yes. Is it
nice to operate quietly in the corner? you bet. I was able to help relay
info amongst the team as I was the only one without headphones, greet those
who entered, help track counties and the bonus station schedule, and
troubleshoot all while staying on air and productive.
I encourage all to participate in digital modes as it adds breadth to the
party. We'll see you on the waterfall next year.
