Gee, I don't see why folks are wondering about the "digital era." As
far as I'm concerned, digital modes have been in use as long as ham
radio has been in use. I've been using digital modes since 1951 when I
was a novice, and the only non digital modes we had were on 2 meters.
Another "mode" developed in the 20's was what we now call RTTY. The
Germans used an on off mode called Hellschreiber or Feldhellschreiber
invented by Rudolf Hell in the 1920's and is still in use by some ham
radio operators.
Maybe we should specify "Later digital modes?" (modes which did not
become practical until the invention of the digital computer?)
As for "never replacing the staple modes", lettuce knot express that
with too great of certainty. Sp*rk was replaced by CW, AM was (all but)
replaced by SSB, etc.
