[PaQSO] why more dx interest than west coast?

Every year I try 10~20m by Sat. and Sun. afternoon when I find few new
contacts on 40m. I find a lot of ARRL sections are out there, some guys
working the PA contest, some working the AZ contest, and some just
responding to give me an extra point or multiplier. I heard very few CA
stations this year, compared to past years. 15m and 10m weren't too busy,
though I did get maybe 15~20 contacts on those bands, and maybe 45 or so on
20m (even a few PA stations!). I did work a few DX entities I had never
worked before, such as FO2, and even a new Canadian section (VY1) I had
never worked before. There was also a contest going on over in EUR so I got
to work several northern Europe stations.
I notice that a good number of people have no idea what ARRL section they
are in when asked. I keep a list of each county/state and what ARRL section
they're in for easy logging during the PAQSO Party. I typically have been
working b/w 55~65 ARRL sections each year.. a good number of bonus
multipliers. It all depends on conditions.. some years, there's lot of west
coast stations on 20~10m.. this year, maybe conditions on 20~10m just we're
not as good.

That has been my experience here in Los Angeles. Although I last worked the
PQP 6 years ago, the only band that was good was 20m. Heard plenty of
stations on 40 and 80, but hard to bust through the wall of W3/W2/W8
stations working PA.
Searching the 3830 archives I found my old score from 2007

I have heard it mentioned that there is not much interest in the PAQP
because you (we) tend to stay on 40m and 80m most of the time and don't give
the left coast a chance to work many PA stations. I had a hard time leaving
40m when the rates were so high but when they slowed down I was surprised to
get several QSOs on a seemingly dead 15m band. Made me wonder what would
have happened if I spent prime hours there.
