I did a two day portable operation from Cameron County about 30 years ago.
I was West of Emporium on Rt 120 and found a nice spot on the South side of
the highway where I could pull way off the road so I was almost hidden in
the trees.  I hung a bunch of wire antennas in the trees.  That seemed to
be the best area as it was high and flat (not mountains).  Doug, W3HDH,
stopped by and said it was the same spot he had operated from in an earlier
year.  It would probable be worth going to take a look before the contest
to pick a nice spot.  For the last two years I have operated as 1/2 of the
W3NO mobile and rover team.  We won't be on this year as I'm heading to CA
to operate in their contest the week before.  It's on my bucket list of
things to do.  Look for me from rare Alpine County, operating from 7,000
feet.
