[PaQSO] PA QSO Party special event station

I am no longer active on HF, in contesting, or in the PA QSO Party. I am
too busy for ham radio. My last contest was running and hosting the W3FRC
multi-multi and special event station in 2003.
I had Gil Crosley, W3YA, as an academic advisor when I started in the
electrical engineering program at Penn State Univ. in 1960. My wife worked
as a secretary in his office. He was ARRL Atlantic Division Director and
Western PA Section Manager during that era. The Penn State Club station was
in one of the old dingy engineering frame buildings, which look liked old
houses. The then new Hammond engineering building was opened around 1960,
with the old buildings hidden behind it. The club station had surplus WWII
gear and I think a home brew transmitter and Hammarlund HQ-129 receiver. I
think some wire dipoles hung from trees behind the engineering buildings.
It was low budget station. The Club station used W3YA as its call, since
Crosley was the trustee and advisor. He was a fine gentleman and mentor,
dedicated to ham radio. I think his original call may have been 8XE. I am
glad to see that his legacy would be honored by Penn State University Club
Station being the special event station. Many hams, including fine
contesters came through Penn State and that club station. Bill, K3ANS ( PSU
class of 1964).

I'm going to guess the Web site hasn't been updated in years. It was
probably around spring of 2006 before any of the hardware went up that
they were listening using the railing. Before I left State College in
April of 2008 the towers had been up for probably close to two years; I
wasn't involved with the club then but I think the stuff went up in the
spring of 2006. Might have been 2007, but it doesn't matter. Many
PSARC members are also active with NARC and the student participation
was not very good, so be sure there would actually be skilled bodies to
operate it. Last thing you want is a special event station that isn't
on the air the whole event. But I'd sure use a tank of gas to go back
up and operate.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone asked the
Penn State ARC if they are interested?
It would be great if they are.

I think K3CR would be a good choice for special event station this year.

The K3CR station is in the process of being moved, and they don't have
their towers up yet. According to their website they are listening to
stations using a metal staircase. While they would be an interesting
candidate, this year probably isn't the best time for that. Maybe an
inauguration of there finished station sometime in the future?
But not to worry, I have narrowed the SES station down to two
candidates. I'll be making the choice soon. Either one would be a good
choice, we'll see how things shake out.

Ron, fear not! I was a student at PSU before/during/after the
demolition of the EE units during the summer of 2005, and I was there
when the plaque was removed; it's been a few years, but I might have
even been the one to take it off door. I was the club president at the
time (well, technically president-elect, I guess) and one of the few
club members on campus that summer and took almost daily photographs of
the process of tearing down those two EE units. They were tough
buildings; it took a lot longer to tear them down than they had planned.
I was no longer involved with the club and can't say if the plaque was
ever installed at the new station in the Wagner Building penthouse, but
it definitely did survive the move out of engineering.

Allen, WG3E

You know what would make an appropriate Special Event Station for this
year?
K3CR up at Penn State. Direct descendant of the wireless station put on
the
air by the EE Department in December 1909, so this is their 100th
Anniversary coming up. They were first licensed as 8XE in 1912, but
then,
so were all of the other Pioneer wireless stations of the time.
For that matter, the Nittany ARC Gilbert L. Crosley Memorial Station,
W3YA,
would also work, as it is also a direct descendant of the pioneer that
became 8XE.
But I'm willing to bet nobody thought of it in time. Pity.
[And, pardon the digression, I sure hope that plaque from the Class of
1912
radio tower that was on the K3CR station door, inside of the old 202
Engineering Unit "E" QTH, survived the move of the station subsequent to
the
demolition of the building; who knows anymore?]

I'll second that motion! :-) Would that make it New School since it's
never been done before?

I like the idea of K3CR. Particularly since they would be unlikely to
come up QRP, which I think is a poor idea. I have always felt the
receiving station should get the bonus points when working a QRP
station.
?
Looking forward to Oct.

I know you're looking for a simple SES this year; however, I would offer
the notion that there are multiple "commonwealth" campuses in
PA?associated with Penn State.? I can easily imagine as system where
folks at the main campus work K3YA; however, there may be special points
for working commonwealth campuses, some of which have their own stations
on the air.
... just a thought,
Charlie, WA3KVN
