Sorry, Mr Bowie. Couldn't resist. ;-)

Now, the meat of it.

Rules changes must be approached just like a sleeping tiger: Cautiously, and
with exponentially more thought and planning than action. Adding another
category is one thing; changing the scoring structure is another.

Frankly, I dislike the QRP point multiplier rule. While I think there
*should* be a bonus for QRP operators - the world has too bleedin' many
people who run legal limit with their good-ol-boys in the next county -
multiplying the entire points total is, in my not-so-humble opinion,
excessive.

Now, changing the points from 1, 1.5, and 2 to a non-fractional numerical
system is bang on. I prefer N1MM for all of my logging, it won't do
fractions, and I really, REALLY hate to work out the score after the fact.
Call me lazy - and I'm certain someone will - but the reason anyone uses
computer software is to make one's life less complicated. Having to sit
down with a calculator and fiddle around with what ought to be perfect data
output obviates that. Further, I really don't want to have multiple
applications on my hard drive in order to operate. I want the old Soviet
model - One Big Thing. Instead of building many small truck factories,
they'd build One Big Factory. I want One Big Program. N1MM perfectly
performs this function for every contest in which I operate *except* PAQP,
and it's all because of the fractional numbers. I've used WB3W's PAQP
software for the past several years, and think it's *fabulous*. The one
problem I have with it is that it won't output a contest-logging standard
like Cabrillo (though I'm told it's being worked out).

For me, simple is best. Most people you ask will tell you: You have to keep
it simple around Bob, for "complicated" makes his brain overheat. In this
particular case, "simple" means basic station equipment, one software
application, and above all else whole numbers.

Now that's out of the way, someone tell me if Pike and Wayne were accessible
this year. I'm trying to plan for 2008.

Cheers,

Bob NQ3X
