The Murgas Club only operated single operations this year. I took on the club call "K3YTL" just to keep our call active.
I thought I would operate the whole contest QRP. Within hours of operation I realized the way conditions were, it would be a waste of time. On Saturday evening I fired up the amp and tried to play catchup. What a disapointment it was for 80 meters to be as noisy as it was late Saturday. At times I felt I was doing EME work on a VHF band with signals fading in and out. 160 meters seemed to be better but the activity was not what it should have been.
Sunday morning I started on 40 meters with a local club member right at 9 am. They were about 10 miles from my QTH. I had to ask them to fire up their amp to make the contact, since the signal was so weak.
About 10 am I went down to the low end of 40 to operate CW. Who were the first few contacts?? California.... I was scratching my head at that point.
With many good runs of contacts at times, I did make it to 1,000 contacts when the bell sounded. What amazed me was missing 8 counties. What didn't amaze me was working as many contacts on CW "the forgotten mode" as SSB.
What a great contest to sharpen up our skills for all the winter tests that follows. DX to all
