I have used 6m SSB as part of a multi with success. 
Have also used 2m FM with success.  The issue is that
there still should be activity windows for both, so
that you can be in the right place at the right time. 
I would propose 6m SSB at 3 PM Sun and 2m FM at 4 PM
Sun.  This will overlap times when known people will
likely be on.  It also puts you on at a slower time,
but still allows you to get back on HF for the end of
the contest.

It all depends upon other people.  Many people REFUSE
to even leave VHF radios on.  Leave a 6m SSB radio on
50.125 and a 2m FM one scanning the simplex
frequencies(146.49, 52, 55, 58.)  Throw out an
occasional call when you take a break or whatever.  

If people glue themselves to HF and will not move,
what can you do?
