RON & Gentlefolks,
I think we've seen enough anecdotal evidence here to support the idea that
there IS indeed a potential -- in some areas a vast potential -- of VHF & UHF
operators that could enhance the contest.RESPONSE: In my area (Delaware
County - Suburban Philly) there IS a vast potential of VHF& UHF operators.
And, as some others have pointed out, sometimes it appears to be a futile
effort to go to the trouble of setting up a V/UHF operating position, and have
few or any to contact.
So what to do?
Here are some thoughts, things that ALL of us (NOT just the Nittany ARC) can
do:
1. Start promoting the contest to those who have an interest in VHF & UHF
operating. Start now. Get them thinking about it.RESPONSE: Totally agree.
2. Those of us who are members of VHF oriented clubs, including repeater
support organizations, should start seeing if there is some interest amongst
those club memberships. Easy to do in some clubs (such as Steel City and
Nittany) where there is already an active V/UHF operating & contesting
contingent. What about the rest? (Anyone on the list who's a PackRat?) RESPONSE: I
AM A PACKRAT AND WOULD BE VERY HAPPY TO PROMOTE THIS CONTEST FOR NEXT YEAR TO
THE CLUB. In addition, the bonus station this year was K3YTL who always
operate ALL the major VHF contests and could have very easily worked a good
portion of the state on many bands from their location. I know I had no trouble
working them even though they are close to 100 miles from my location.
What say you?
