[PaQSO] Digital Modes

Didnt we have the PSK and RTTY debate a short while
back? Since it keeps coming up, I suppose we must
keep giving opinions.
I am NOT in favor of digital modes for a few simple
reasons. I think that there is enough to do now. We
can already do SSB and CW on multiple HF bands. We
can also do VHF and then some, if we so choose. Throw
in some FM, too. How much is enough? Isnt the above
enough to occupy someone? It is impossible to
adequately cover all of those areas the way it is.
The competitors amongst us will have to run out and
play with the digital modes, if they are allowed.
This will force everyone who wants to compete to do
likewise. More equipment to buy, figure out, install,
etc. Remember, if people are on digital, they are NOT
on CW or SSB. You are robbing QSOs from one place
and moving them to someplace else. There is no net
gain!
I love computers as much as anyone else, but radio is
a release to get away from them(except for logging.)
I look forward to ridding myself of fancy technology,
since I am bombarded with it all day every day! A
little simplicity works wonders! If I want to use a
computer I can use the Internet, why would I want to
play with a computer during a contest? Dont quite
understand that one.
I thought that the digital people were looking into a
Digital PA QSO. What happened to that? You can run
it as a sprint for several hours, perhaps. Maybe have
6 hours and thats it. Sprints are common on VHF and
they work well. Everyone goes all out for the
duration. You can then focus all of your efforts on
that.
