[PaQSO] Dayton

The Dayton OH area is suffering from the current depression, er, recession,
er, economic downturn as much as any other city it's size in the urban Rust
Belt. What I saw away from the HARA grounds did look more promising.

Keep in mind, of course, that things change. It wasn't that many years ago
that the car dealership across the street from HARA was closed and used only
for parking, and then for a few years a mini-computer show was going on
there at the same time as Hamvention. Last two years, it's been a busy,
thriving car dealership again.

The mall (Salem Mall, isn't it?) has been in better shape in the past, and
hopefully it will be again; many malls get hurt when a major "anchor" store
leaves (be it closing for one of a number of reasons, or moving to newer /
larger / cheaper quarters elsewhere) and suffer until another one takes it's
place. Sometimes that doesn't happen and the mall disappears or gets
converted to other uses (what was Allegheny Center Mall on Pittsburgh's
North Shore is now an office complex, no mall; Parkway Center Mall may
follow. ACM began to die when Sears pulled out, PCM has suffered since
PharMor & CompUSA left... but I digress).

I would say that Hamvention has been on the decline for about 4 years for a
lot of factors. Hopefully the new regime can turn things around. Somehow
"Columbus Hamvention" just doesn't have the same ring to it...

I noticed that entire area around the Hara Arena was pretty run down. A
dead mall, a dead Home Depot type store, and other defunct businesses.
Is all Dayton like this?
