[PaQSO] QSL Card ideas

John,
I usually do the same thing for small runs of cards (be it for a specific
contest or for portable operations away from the home QTH). For larger
runs, I used to have a local ham who owns a print shop print a "stock"
design on one side of the cardstock -- saves on my personal printer wear &
tear. This becomes the card front, and I keep minimal information there --
usually call, location, and an indication of the contest or portable
operation (although the last time I troubled Hank to print cards for me, I
re-used an old B&W pen-and-ink drawing that N3CHT's then-wife had designed
for me a long, long, long time ago).
I then print the QSO information on the back of the card (usually using a
dBase IV Label Format routine, since the cardstock I use is perforated 4
cards to a sheet). I also get more specific in some cases on the back --
details of operating location, equipment in use, etc.
One note of caution: Most inexpensive home printers are not designed to
handle large runs of cardstock. A few sheets now and then isn't a problem.
But if you're going to do several hundred or thousand cards, strongly
consider getting a commercial printer to put an image or logo or whatever on
one side, and borrow a commercial-quality laser printer (even an old one
like an HP LaserJet II, III or IV) to do the other side. Otherwise, you may
find that the few dollars you saved rolling your own got eaten up in the
costs of new ink cartridges (especially if you favor a lot of color) or
worse, a new printer!

Subject: [PaQSO] QSL Card ideas
Hi all,
Well, it's been about a week, and I already have 5 QSL requests in my box.
Thats not counting e-qsl (haven't checked there yet).
Before I do my usual PQP card, I thought I'd check here. Do any of you have
anything special that you do for your special cards (i.e. mobile, rover,
portable, etc)?
I usually design card on the PC, using a picture from ARM, then print it on
card stock.
I guess I'm thinking of maybe doing something different this year.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
John, KD8MQ
