If, by "running with the big guns" you mean getting into the top 5 or top
10, yes, you either need "BIG POWER" or "little power".
In 2003, the top 5 were 4 QRO's (1, 2, 3 and 5) and one QRP (#4)
In 2002 it was 3 QRO's, (1, 2 and 3) and 2 QRP's (4 and 5)
Looking a little deeper, the top 10 in those years were composed of:
2003: 8 QRO's and 2 QRP's
2002: 7 QRO's, 1 medium and 2 QRP's.
So, to make the top five, either get an amp or go QRP, and in either case,
be serious about it.
